What is Oral Surgery?
Oral surgery is the area of medicine concerned with correcting problems or damage to the mouth, teeth and jaw. It is often referred to as “Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery” which combines oral surgery with surgery on the structures of the face, sinuses and neck.
Oral surgery is commonly performed to remove wisdom teeth, prepare the mouth for dentures, repair jaw problems and perform root canals and more.
It includes the diagnosis, surgical and related treatment of diseases, injuries and defects involving both the functional and esthetic aspects of the hard and soft tissues of the head, mouth, teeth, gums, jaws and neck.
Examples of Oral Surgeries include: dental implants, wisdom teeth removal, apicoectomy, TMJ disorder, facial trauma, corrective jaw surgery, oral pathology, osseous tissue surgery, anesthesia and bone grafts.
